MySQL (/ˌmaɪˌɛsˌkjuːˈɛl/ “My S-Q-L”) is an open-source relational database management system (RDBMS). Its name is a combination of “My”, the name of co-founder Michael Widenius‘s daughter, and “SQL“, the abbreviation for Structured Query Language. Was facing the issue of mysql server failed to start on my Linux Mint and couldn’t find any way through. the best solution I found on internet to reinstall mysql_server. Which solved the issue for me for the first 2 times. But later I wanted to approach a different solution rather than reinstalling it every time. So today, I’ll share a different way which solved my issue.
I tried to start the server by running this on my terminal
sudo systemctl start mysql
There was also no log or error file. So I decided to start the mysql daemon because sometimes it fails to start on system startup.
sudo mysqld start
Which returned me an error which wasn’t expected.
So I created a mysql folder in /var/log folder and gave required permission to user:group mysql so it can create/modify any *.log files
sudo mkdir /var/log/mysql
sudo chown -R mysql:mysql /var/log/mysql
Then tried again to start the mysql daemon and it started this time.
then try restarting the mysql service by
sudo sytemctl restart mysql
and yesss! it started without any error
Just a quick note that I am not saying that this is the workable solution for all cases. I am just sharing a way which actually worked in my case.
